We learn new skills and go on new adventures to achieve different badges. In meetings, we mostly cover badges that involve discussions or peer influence. This includes talking about the environment or what to do in emergency situations. We also learn new skills like how to tie knots, and how to do first aid. In cubs, the many knots that we learn are: the reef knot, the sheep bend, the bowline, the round turn and two half hitches, the clove hitch, the fisherman’s knot. To learn how to do these knots you can click on the name of the knot to see how it is done. Each meeting there is a different topic or skill that we learn. At camps, we also do badge work here we can test a cub on wilderness skills such as fire lighting, and cooking. In addition, we go on our outings to complete more badge work such as getting community service hours. We normally go to the food bank once a year to do this. Cubs also have a chance to do badges at home and show our leader the skill or papers that prove that the cub has earned a badge. There is normally a leader in charge of looking at the badge work at every meeting during game time. Six Willowdale main goals in completing badges and to achieve all six stars. Cubs normally achieve this in their final year in cubs before they move on to scouts. In January, our primary focus will be aspects of the green star, and Winter Cubbing Badge. We have a 'heated-cabin' camp at Woodland Trails Scout Camp planned for January 31- February 2, the theme "The Ice Age". In addition, the cubs will participate in Operation Snowman on Sunday, February 2nd. Operation Snowman is an annual day of fun outdoor winter challenge games in light-hearted competition with other cub groups from the area. During February, our program will focus on the blue star. We hope to visit the police and fire stations in the new year. Tanya (Chi!) is planning an evening on 'Law Awareness' with a particular focus on 'life in a jail'. |
